The Colombia Project launched its 9th Annual Spring Fundraiser in February in anticipation of supporting its 1000th micro-loan in 2012 while increasing efforts towards sustainability. The immediate priority is to replenish our bank account after sending a record $18,000 to Colombia last year. Thanks to $33,000 in loans supported through the permanent loan pools in Colombia, plus the $18,000 from the U.S., The Colombia Project funded over $51,000 in micro-loans last year. We anticipate an equally active 2012. Following on a successful $4000 Rotary Club grant application in 2011, The Colombia Project is working on a $15,000 Rotary International application, contingent upon enlisting the support of a Rotary Club in Colombia.

While funding considerations are always important, over the years our attention has shifted towards developing local leadership. Towards this end, Colombia Project board members will travel at their own expense to present a series of workshops at the March 9-11th partners’ meetings in Pereira. The purpose of the workshops is to strengthen the support network of Colombia Project administrators and work towards the transfer of program responsibility to Colombia over the next 5-10 years. The workshops will include an overview of similarities and differences of program implementation across Colombia, a session on creative ways to use Colombia Project earnings (interest and a portion of initial loan repayments) to build sustainable community services, a session on reports and closing session on our respective visions for this micro-loan program over the next 5 years.

The Colombia Project has already achieved a degree of sustainability in that several partners built up loan pools adequate to continue their programs with no additional resources from the U.S. Within 4 years of starting its micro-loan, Genova in Quindio built a permanent loan pool of $6500 which appears adequate to meet the on-going needs of that community. While Genova officially ‘graduated’ from The Colombia Project in 2011, and is not expected to need any additional funds, they will remain in the administrator network helping us plan for transfer of Colombia Project oversight to Colombia. Two additional partners have the potential to become self-sustaining in 2012.

It is now possible to donate online to The Colombia Project. 100% of your donations to The Colombia Project are sent to Colombia and distributed as microloans. Your tax deductible donations have approximately six times the purchase power in Colombia as in the U.S. And with our statistics showing that each dollar sent to Colombia is loaned out (and repaid) on average once per year, over a five year period, The Colombia Project offers a 30 times larger bang for the donation buck than most charitable organizations.

On behalf of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida (RPCVSF) and The Colombia Project board, and 880 loan recipients in Colombia, a hearty THANKS for your support.

The Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida, RPCVSF, participated again this year in the Habitat for Humanity BLITZ Build at Habitat Oaks in the Liberty City section of Miami . Four RPCVSF members were on site at house number one of ten houses being constructed during the two week BLITZ Build effort. The group included Seamus Gleeson, May Chan, Aixa Nuno and Daryl Wall . Our task was to frame all the interior walls, we must have driven over a thousand 16 penny nails, but we got it done before quitting time around 3 PM. When completed in two weeks the house will become a four bedroom two bath home for the buyer, her 8 year old daughter and her sister. It was hard work, as usual, but we all came away satisfied that we got a lot done not to mention the T-Shirt we were each given!

2011 was the World Market’s best year ever! Sales totaled $6,260 with profits of $2,131 …. $1,549 going to HELP (Haitian Education and Leadership Program, uhelp.net) and $582 to the Colombia Project. Although we have ventured out into the community at the South Miami Farmer’s Market and Fairchild’s Ramble, RPCVs remain our best customers.

However, the World Market is about more than making money. It’s a way to fulfill the Third Goal of the Peace Corps – to help our citizens better understand other people and their cultures. Our customers are often truly impressed by how the women of Global Mamas use just about everything in making their bags, jewelry etc. (Talk about recycle!) There is a person-to-person connection there and, I believe, the customer leaves our booth with a respect for these women in Ghana.

The World Market will be at the South Miami Farmer’s Market (SMFM) on the first and third Saturdays of the month through April … just in case you need a birthday present, are out of coffee or decide to treat yourself to that necklace you’ve been eyeing for awhile. SMFM is on the south side of Sunset Drive just west of U.S. 1 in front of City Hall. There is a huge green tent on market days; you can’t miss it!

Many thanks to true, blue volunteers Sally Rowley and Stan Boynton who show up every Market Day. Other volunteers (especially for the volunteer intensive Ramble) include Steve Rawlins, Doris Vincent, Marti Sweitzer, Liz Whitney and Friends of Peace Corps, Janice Mauldin and Alma Shissler.

The NPCA has advocated on a number of PC-related and other global issues, and is looking for some direction from RPCVs. Specifically, Jonathan Pearson, the Advocacy Coordinator, has requested input on the following three points:

QUESTION 1: A very important takeaway for me from our 50th Anniversary session is that our advocacy on global issues has not penetrated the community. Please offer your thoughts on how we can best improve our efforts to communicate to you (and others within the Peace Corps community) about global issues advocacy initiatives and action opportunities. How do we best strengthen visibility and recognition of this part of our advocacy program?

QUESTION 2: Because we are a non-profit organization that is separate from the Peace Corps, we need revenue to support our advocacy initiatives, but have struggled to generate that support, especially as it pertains to global issues advocacy. Please offer your thoughts on how we might generate revenue to support global issues advocacy. Please be as specific as possible (for example, rather than saying “approach foundations”…are there any foundations which you think/know would be interested in supporting further engagement of the Peace Corps community in global issues advocacy?)

QUESTION 3: Open forum. Please offer any additional thoughts that you believe are pertinent to our discussion on the National Peace Corps Association and global issues advocacy.

Please submit your thoughts and ideas to dorisvincent@bellsouth.net. Thanks!

We need your help to make 2012 start great for a group of kids and young adults!

Will you join us at the annual RPCVSF Everglades Outing to share your love and knowledge of the Everglades with a group of at-risk children and teens who have not had the opportunity to spend an afternoon among one of nature’s most splendid creations? It truly makes a difference in their lives and you will feel great about it. If you would like to volunteer as a naturalist please contact Kiki Mutis for more details (kikimutis@gmail.com). It truly helps to have you there.

If you’re not a naturalist we still need your help to set up, serve lunch, clean up, and assist the guides. You get to spend a beautiful day in the park, and you can earn community service hours. If you’d like to help contact Emily at emilyeisenhauer@yahoo.com.

Meet at the Ernest F. Coe Everglades National Park visitor’s center in Homestead at 8:45am where we will greet the children. We will then lead small groups through the Royal Palm board walk and Long Pine Key habitats. For directions to the park follow this link http://www.nps.gov/ever/planyourvisit/coedirections.htm
