Our guest speaker will be RPCV José Javier Rodríguez (Senegal) an attorney with Florida Legal Services (FLS) and, until recently, an Adjunct Clinical Professor at FIU’s College of Law. José Javier will talk about his experience as a Peace Corps volunteer and how it has made him more effective in community-based work. As a volunteer he served in Senegal where he partnered with businesses and local associations as a small business advisor in Bakel, ‘00-‘02; then on special assignment he advised the Employment Section for Senegal’s Ministry of Labor in Dakar, ‘02-‘03. After earning a law degree from Harvard Law, J.D ‘06, he returned to Miami and co-founded the Community Justice Project, a project of FLS dedicated to community-based work. José Javier has worked with day laborers and other low-wage workers to recover unpaid wages and educate workers about their rights, with employees of municipal contractors to enforce and strengthen local living wage laws, with residents of low-income mobile home parks and their mobile homeowners’ associations to protect their rights as tenants, with immigrants’ rights advocates to remedy misconduct on the part of law enforcement authorities, with advocates to draft and pass local ordinances, with taxicab drivers to advocate for fairer local regulation, and with neighborhood-based organizations to increase civic engagement. José Javier credits his time as a Peace Corps volunteer with helping develop valuable skills and insights which would later be critical to the success of his work.
